Q&A with Dr. Sari: Science of Rest and Relaxation
How does stress reduction improve my health?
Chronic stress triggers the release of cortisol and adrenaline, which can lead to high blood pressure, increased heart rate, and inflammation—all of which increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and other autoimmune disease. By reducing cortisol and adrenaline production you reduces inflammation and improve overall health.
How does poor sleep impact my health?
Unrestful sleep whether due to chronic pain or stress, can lead to difficulty with attention, memory, and cognition. In addition, disruptions in the sleep cycle are often associated with worsening chronic pain disorders due to dysregulation of neurotransmitters. Restful and refreshing sleep improves pain and wellbeing by allowing for improved regulatory pain responses by the central nervous system.
Will incorporating daily relaxation keep the doctor away?
While the phrase "an apple a day will keep the doctor away" is well known, it is also true that routine daily mindfulness routines improve mental health, wellness and overall happiness!
Will I live longer if I incorporate daily relaxation techniques to reduce stress?
Individuals with high levels of stress have a higher risk of mortality from various causes, including heart disease and cancer. On the other hand, individuals who actively manage their stress through relaxation techniques tend to have lower risk factors and longer lifespans.
